As I wrote on last post, I will show what are the secondary effect on Cyclone Yasi.

Economical
North Queensland supplies about 85% of the nation’s bananas. Cyclone Yasi wiped out the crops so the price of the banana increased. Before the cyclone, the price of banana was around $3-4 a kilo but it jumped to around $10-15 after the hazard. Once banana prices go above $5 or $6 a kilo, the consumption drops off dramatically.
Queensland has 20% of australia’s sugar cane production, but crops were damaeged by cyclone.
Related to agriculture there was a loss of at least $800 million.

Social
25 Mobile phone towers out of commission and over 10,000 landlines disconnected.

Responses
The government and people tried to protect themselves and recover these damages after cyclone has gone.
For immediate response 3000 people seek refuge to shopping centre, when Cyclone Yasi slams the city.
For long term response, Wahroonga, New South Wales – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia has committed $50,000 to support those affected by the Cyclone Yasi.
Also the Queensland Parks and Wild life Service worked to recover damage to park and environments.

This website has video of families taking refuge in car parks and evacuation centres.

Massive storm destroyed homes, shredded crops and smashed marinas and island resorts as the Cyclone passed along. These are some primary effects on cyclone yasi.

Environmental
Cyclone Yasi damaged important habitat for endangered animals, mahogany gliders. When they lose habitat, the animal that needs that tree will die. Also rainforest plants have evolved many strategies for recovering from the damage caused by high winds.

82 state schools in far north Queensland
93 state schools in north Queensland
53 Catholic schools
26 independent schools
5 TAFE colleges

Economical
There was an effect on tourism, cyclone yasi made landfall between the cities of innisfail ad Cardwell which lie near the famous touring spot; Great Barrier Reef, one of the most iconic attractions. The reports said that the people visited on Queensland or holiday resorts on some islands have been totally destroyed by Cyclone Yasi and cleaning and re-building have to be undertaken before tourism related activities could begin again.

On the next post, i will talk about secondary effects.

I will have some more information about Cyclone Yasi but at first, I will show the cause of cyclone.

Cyclone Yasi began developing as a tropical low northwest of Fiji on 29th January. The Yasi started to move west-southward movement and began to accelerate towards the tropical Queensland coast. The development of cyclone yasi is same as normal cyclone but the scale of the cyclone was huge.

Now, I am in Queensland to have the report of the Cyclone Yasi. It already passed but I can see how this terrible cyclone impacted around here. These are some key facts:

This shows the path way the Cyclone Yasi has past.

Yasi tracked inland into the state’s north-west, finally weakening to a tropical low near Mount. Isa more than 20 hours after it crossed the coast.

I will have some more information about Cyclone Yasi on next post.
